Collaborating with local stakeholders is a critical part of SELC’s work, and Stephanie is immersed in relationship building around water issues in Tennessee, including on the Duck River. The Duck is one of the most biodiverse rivers in the world and located entirely within Tennessee. Its long-term health and viability depend on responsible management, and advocating for its sustainable use is part of her role at SELC.

Stephanie is also involved in public lands and wildlife protection as well as hazardous substance remediation work. In particular, she is involved in advocating for the restorative and sustainable use of forests in the Southern Appalachians as well as identifying protective and long-term cleanup solutions at Superfund sites, with a particular focus on the U.S. Department of Energy’s activities in Oak Ridge.

The Great Smoky Mountains hold special memories for Stephanie, from family camping and hiking trips to visiting Greenbrier. She’s from Knoxville, and love of the region motivates her work. “There are as many ways to live out our love for this land as there are Southerners existing, but personally, I think working for SELC is the most meaningful, fulfilling, and engaging way I can do it,” she says.

I feel both great privilege that I am from the South as well as a deep responsibility to tend to and care for this area well, and SELC provides the best setting imaginable to do that work.
