Office:

Charlottesville, VA – Virginia Office

Morgan Butler

Senior Attorney

Morgan is a veteran leader at SELC, which he joined in 2004. He heads SELC’s coastal resilience work in Virginia, works on land and community issues, and co-chairs the Key Committee, which helps steer SELC’s diversity, equity and inclusion efforts. For a dozen years, Morgan led SELC’s Charlottesville-Albemarle Project, which advocates for local planners to adopt smarter growth practices.

“When you boil it all down, SELC is a group of compassionate and courageous people working together very effectively to make the world a safer place for all of its inhabitants.” he said. “That’s my recipe for fulfillment.”

When asked what it is about SELC that most inspires him, Morgan describes the strategic way SELC chooses to work.

Though we have such a strong group of gifted litigators at SELC, I’m always proud when we help bring about positive change without having to resort to the courts.

Morgan Butler

“SELC focuses a lot of our time and energy on shaping decisions at the executive and legislative branches of government. When we work successfully with legislators to strengthen environmental protections and with agencies to enact smart policies, it restores my faith in our system of government and really underscores the value of SELC’s multi-faceted approach.”

Morgan’s roots and love for Virginia go deep. It is his favorite place in the SELC region. After growing up in Fairfax, he has spent most of his life in Charlottesville.

Virginia offers a little bit of everything,” Morgan says. “From the beautiful mountain ridges and valleys in the west, to the gently rolling hills of the Piedmont, to the marshlands and beaches that cradle the Chesapeake Bay and greet the Atlantic, and to everything and everyone in between, there’s just so much to love about this state.”
